U.S. Military Teams up with NBA During All-Star Service Weekend

Charles EadieThe 2014 National Basket Ball Association All-Star Weekend brought together athletes and soldiers from around the nation during the weekend of February 14th.  NBA Cares, a community outreach initiative focused on community development, education and public health coordinates service days every year in conjunction with major events around the country.  This year’s event included six home renovations in the Algiers point community of New Orleans, cleaning up Joseph S. Clark High School in the Treme Neighborhood and building a new playground at the Knowledge is Power Program New Orleans Leadership Primary School.

Marine Capt. Samuel Baumer, the Marine Forces Reserve 4th Marine Logistics Group adjutant, defined the weekend by saying, “It’s good for the local community and the neighborhood as a whole.  The service members get to see a different side of the community and interact with the locals, meet their neighbors as well as fellow volunteers. It gives them a chance to show the community that we are here for them and that we are all on the same team, working toward the same goals.”

In total, the Defense Department provided 100 military service members to assist with the NBA Day of Service.  “We are excited to be alongside the NBA and all the good things they do, not just for our military service members but for families and youth development as well,” Marine Sgt. Maj. Bryan B. Battaglia said.

Many current and former NBA players stood alongside military personnel during the weekend, including former NBA and gold-medal Olympian basketball player Samuel Perkins.  The NBA has multiple service initiatives, with NBA Cares being one of the largest.  In addition to giving back to communities in need, the NBA works to connect military personnel with the communities in which they live and serve through these days of service.
